They are quite advanced in phase 3 now and their technology is simply elegant. Conditional approval could be by end of this year already so that they are leading in this field.

And i don’t see any problem about this because it gives us a lot of benefits upon checking the net I saw this article https://www.worldwide-marijuana-seeds.com/blogs/marijuana-news/how-should-america-proceed-with-marijuana that Colorado is one of the few places where cannabis consumption for funsies is allowed. It’s not that way for everyone though. Cannabis is still a Schedule I drug, so naturally, this makes things a little complicated for people living in public housing, but it helps the industry also.

Comment on Planting the Seeds to Grow the Italian Biotech Industry by defrajac https://www.labiotech.eu/interview/biotech-industry-italy-sofinnova/#comment-114276 Mon, 30 Apr 2018 06:21:00 +0000 https://www.labiotech.eu/?p=57169#comment-114276 In reply to Labiotech.eu.

Dear Labiotech.eu,

Yes, Chiesi and Zambon are two mid-sized companies, but they don’t have enough monetary power (and the will) to start a campaign of M&A to consolidate the italian biopharma industry. Moreover, with the exception of Chiesi, which invested €340M in R&D (22% of 2016’s revenue), Italian biopharma companies don’t invest in R&D. This means they will never develop a so called blockbuster. This means they will always remain a group of good small-/mid-sized companies that manufacture drugs discovered and developed by others. We don’t even have a big generic company, like Teva or Mylan…
Maybe one day Italy will reach the level of other European countries, but all the stars must be aligned: Capital, right entrepreneurs, right management.
Nevertheless, I have hope about Italy, exactly like Sofinnova.

Hi Claudio,

While it is true that Italy does not have big pharma, it does have two mid-sized pharma, Chiesi and Zambon. I’d say it’s not a bad starting point to try to get to the level of the other countries you mention.

Germany: Bayer, Boheringer Ingelheim, Merck Kga.
Switzerland: Novartis, Roche.
France: Sanofi.
Scandinavia: Novo Nordisk
Italy: ???
All the nations mentioned in the article have something Italy does not have: A Big Pharma industry! Without a so called anchor tenant I doubt Italy will make it. All Big Pharmas have corporate VC units/offices and all can invest or M&A, or even give grants, to small biotech companies. The Italian pharma industry is basically an industry that manufacture drugs for others and the aggregate 2016 revenues for the ten major companies was…$16B, what Roche makes in a quarter and what BI makes in a year…If some of the “big” (Menarini, Recordati, where are you?) Italian players don’t start a serious campaign of M&A in Italy with the aim to create an Italian Big Pharma, the biotech sector will always be minuscule, despite all the efforts that Sofinnova or other VCs can make.
Nevertheless I really trust Italian scientists, they do a great job even with a fraction of the resources of their American or European counterparts. They should be more trained in creating a business, and this is a gap that could be easy to fill up.

Hi, I agree ideally effectiveness should be enough, but when a therapy fails commercially it can lead to its withdrawal, meaning patients no longer have access to curative technology. The article provides an outlook on what can be done to not only make the treatment profitable but also more affordable and therefore accessible to more people.
